Self Introduction
Formal Situations
Read the dialogues as many times as possible. Then find a
partner and practise them.
Dialogue 1
Two people greet each other politely in an airport’s boarding
room. It sounds formal and friendly.
Peter : Good afternoon.
Jane : Good afternoon.
Peter : My name is Peter. What›s your name?
Jane : My name is Jane. Nice to meet you.
Peter : It’s a pleasure. This is a great party!
Jane : Yes, it is. Where are you from?
Peter : I’m from Amsterdam. Where are you from?
Jane : I’m from Spain.
Conversation Practices
Peter : That’s very interesting. Spain is a beautiful
country.
Jane : Thank you. It is a wonderful place.
Dialogue 2
One Monday morning in a large hall of a hotel, two people
started a conversation fomally. Similar to dialogue above, they
introduce each other’s name before talking more.
John : Good morning.
Alan : Good morning. How are you?
John : I’m very well, thank you. And you?
Alan : I’m fine. Thank you for asking.
John : I don’t believe we’ve met before, I’m John.
Alan : Pleased to meet you. I’m Alan.
John : Do you have a meeting this morning?
Alan : Yes, I do. Do you have a meeting as well?
John : Yes. It was a pleasure seeing you.
Alan : Goodbye.
John : Goodbye.
Dialogue 3
A teacher wants to introduce herself in the first meeting of
her class. She introduced herself before starting to get to know
her students and before starting the lesson.
Teacher : Good morning class.
Students : Good morning, mam.
Teacher : How are you today?
Students : Very well, thank you. And you?
Teacher : I am great, thanks. Let me introduce myself.

Dialogue 4
This conversation took place in front of a classroom at
the beginning of new academic year. The two people are
new students and wish to be good friends.
Sarah : Hello, how are you?
Mary : Hi, I’m very well, thanks. How are you?
Sarah : Great, thanks! My name is Sarah, what’s
yours?
Mary : I’m Mary. Nice to meet you, Sarah.
Sarah : Nice to meet you too. I’m a new student
here.
Mary : You are? Me too. Where do you live?
Sarah : I live in the dormitory of the university.
Mary : So do I. In which floor is your room?
Informal Situations
Sarah : My room is number 305, third floor. You?
Mary : Mine is fourth floor, room number 400.
Sarah : Our rooms are quite close. We can walk to
campus together then.
Mary : Sure, why not. Let’s make good friends,
Sarah.
Sarah : Yeah, of course.
Mary : Anyway I need to meet with my brother
now. See you later
Sarah : See you.
Dialogue 5
A person wanted to know the way to get to a place so he asked
a person around him. He started to talk informally because the
person he met looked younger.
Adam : Hi, I’m Adam. What’s your name?
Ben : Hello, my name is Ben. Good to see you.
Adam : Good to see you too.
Ben : Are you a student here?
Adam : No, I’m just a visitor. What about you?
Ben : I’m a junior student of this university.
Adam : What a luck! Can you show me the way to
get to the faculty building?
Ben : Sure. I can take you there. Let’s go.
Adam : Thank’s a lot.
Dialogue 6
Two university students meet for the first time. They greet
each other and talk informally and friendly rspecially because
later they found out that they are the same year students.
Clara : Hello
Joni : Hi.
Clara : I’m Clara.
Joni : Nice to meet you, Clara. My name is Joni.
Clara : Pleased to meet you too, Joni.
Joni : Your accent is Javanese. Are you from Java?
Clara : Right, I’m originally from Solo. What about
you?
Joni : Well, I was born in Makassar, but when I was
five, my parents moved to Jakarta so I grow
up in Jakarta.
Clara : I am a freshman student here.
Joni : Me too.
Clara : Really?
Joni : Yeah
Clara : We might be taking the same courses then.
Joni : That’s right.
Clara : And now I have a problem with registration
of some courses.
Joni : Problem with the access?
Clara : Right. Have you completed yours?
Joni : Yes. It is better to do the registration near
its center.
Clara : Where is that?
Joni : I can take you there but I have to see my
brother first the I will come back.
Clara : That’s very kind of you
Joni : Never mind. Bye for now.
Clara : Ok, bye.
